Controversial Grays town centre building ablaze
ALIGHT AGAIN: Crews tackle the blaze today.
ALIGHT AGAIN: Crews tackle the blaze today.

A DISUSED gym and leisure club in Grays which has been the centre of a major planning wrangle went up in flames again at lunchtime.

Firefighters from Grays, Orsett and Billericay tackled the fire in the old Dominoes building on Grays High Street.

Fire crews reported that the ground floor and first floor are 50 per cent alight and the building is heavily smoke logged.

Fire crews are wearing breathing apparatus and using two hose reels to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters at the scene said they throught the blaze was suspicious.

The building has previously been the scene of several fire. Last week it was at the heart of a rebuild planning application which was approved by Thurrock councillors, but turned down by Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation.

Thurrock Council are supposed to make this building safe - yet again they have failed.
Maybe if someone dies next time they will act.
Well done gazette for not mentioning the council is to blame - again - your becoming an in house magazine ... I wonder why?

Bob why is it Thurrock Councils responsibility to secure this derelict building? We know the building is owned by someone as there are regular stories on the planning application. They are responsible for the securing of their building not the council and not the council tax payers who fund the council

Why should the shoring up be paid for out of our council tax? Surely the owners and their insurance company are responsible for this building.

Correct me if I am wrong, but this building is listed so should not be redeveloped. Other listed buildings in the area seamed to catch fire a lot and have now been developed. Anyone see a pattern emerging here.

Well, no surprises here. Property developer doesn't get own way over redevelopment of a listed builing and, oh what a surprise' it's on fire.

Which one will be next? The State Cinema no doubt.

Thurrock Council must act NOW to save the state from destruction.

RE the State cinema, a local campaign has started to raise public awareness and petition the council & owners to get the building restored and reopened as a performance venue.
